INSTALLATION

If
you are not the do-it-yourself type and you don t have the time
to be a general contractor, Stagestep will recommend installers
in your area. Call Stagestep at 800-523-0960 for availability
and pricing.
Stagestep
will work with your general contractor or carpenter to assure specifications
are met.
PLYWOOD

BC
or AC underlayment plywood (i.e. cabinet grade or solid cure, no
void) must be used in all Springstep applications. Seasoned wood
with moisture content between 6 - 10% solid core is necessary to
prevent warping. Tongue in groove plywood can be used, but is not
required. Make sure there is at least a 1/2 inch gap between subfloor
and all walls.
SOUND
RETARDATION

In
certain installations, it may be necessary to isolate or reduce
sound transmission. Use sound isolation material between the 2' x
4' stringers in Springstep 1.Use half-inch foam between the wall
and the subfloor for Springstep II, III and IV. Quietstep, Dancestep
and Woodstep Plus are foam-backed flooring that reduces sound by
a minimum of 25 lbs.
DAMP
PROOF MEMBRANES

All
concrete slabs which are at or below grade (ground level) must have
an effective damp proof membrane between the concrete and the subfloor.
A continuous polyethylene sheet. 12mils thick (500 gauge) will provide
an effective moisture barrier. Sheeting must run up the wall 6-1/2"
for Springstep I, 3-1/2" for Springstep II, and 2" for
Springstep III and 2-3/4" for Springstep IV. In installation
above grade, a liquid sealant will serve the purpose when applied
properly.
MOISTURE
AND TEMPERATURE

Plywood
used in Springstep
subfloor construction should be tested for moisture content. Wood
materials with moisture content less than 6% or in excess of 10%
should not be used. Written certification of moisture content should
be obtained from manufacturer, and is necessary for warranty purposes.
Construction of Springstep
subfloors should be done in a clean, dry space in a temperature
between 65 - 80 degrees.
SCREWS
Use
1-1/2" continuous thread wood deck screws with counter sinking
heads for Springstep I. Use 1" wood deck screws for Springstep
II and III.
Do
not use nails or drywall screws.
All
screws must be countersunk.
Certain
construction staples can substitute for screws in permanent installations.

CAUTION
Never use RWB* (random wafer board), chipboard, particle board, or masonite in a Springstep
I, II, or III subfloor construction.
Use plywood and Luan only! (Springstep IV comes with specially treated
wood.)
* RWB is a manufactured wood that is stronger than ply, comes with a smooth top surface and contains
resins resistant to moisture. |
